Stabilizers
Polymers/plastics/paints need to be stabilized against heat so that they survive the high temperatures during transformation into flooring, wallpaper, pipes, bottles, automotive paints, etc. They also need to be stabilized against the attack of the ultraviolet radiation (UV) during exposure to sunlight. It was Dr.Gehriger's job to send samples of colored paint samples to Arizona (dry heat) and Florida (humid heat) for outdoor exposure so that he could evaluate the efficiency of the UV-stabilizers.
